It’s a common myth that you need a modern, well-insulated property for heat pumps to work. Heat pumps work in buildings of all types and ages (as shown in a recent report covering efficiency factors by UK Government / Energy Catapult), the system just needs to be designed accordingly. This is why it’s important to have your system designed and installed by an expert.
Of course, insulation reduces the heating requirements of the home and so a more insulated property with a heat pump, all else being equal, will have lower fuel bills.
-
With any heating system, the better your insulation the less hard your system has to work to keep your home warm, so it’s always advisable to insulate where you can. However heat pumps are just as effective as gas boilers providing the system has been designed and installed properly.
Don’t take our word for it - this recent report by the Energy Systems Catapult concluded that heat pumps are suitable for almost every home!
Note that you will need a minimum level of insulation in order to be eligible for the BUS grant.

No, heat pumps are generally quiet.
The outdoor unit produces a low-level humming sound, similar to a refrigerator. Modern models are designed with noise reduction features, making them unobtrusive and suitable for residential areas.
-
Air-source heat pumps are a similar size to a modern gas boiler but are sited outside the home. This means you will typically regain valuable cupboard space in your home.
The heat pump unit can be sited anywhere outside with a moderate amount of clearance around it.
System hot-water tanks can be sited in existing airing cupboards or in loft space depending on your preference.

The Snugscription is a subscription from Fornax that involves the installation of a heat pump system in your home, including components like water cylinders and radiators, followed by annual servicing.
Instead of paying up-front, you pay through fixed monthly payments over a long-term contract, making the transition to a more environmentally friendly heating system easier to budget for and hassle-free.
