 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. It’s a myth that you need a modern property for heat pumps to work.

Heat pumps work in buildings of all types and ages, as shown in a recent report by the UK Government. The system just needs to be designed accordingly.

This is why it’s important to have your system designed and installed by an expert, who can customise their work to your property type.

Of course, insulation reduces the heating requirements of a home. It is true than a newer and more insulated property with a heat pump is likely to have lower bills than an older, less insulated property one.

  • Yes. The only things that a heat pump needs to work are a water tank and an electricity supply.

Because they don’t need to be attached to the gas mains supply, heat pumps are an ideal switch for oil boiler households looking to modernise their central heating system.

They’re also cheaper to run, better for the environment, and with no regular oil deliveries they’re much easier to manage!

  • Yes. Heat pumps tend to generate between 300% - 500% as much heat as the energy they consume.

That means for every kWh of electricity consumed, the heat pump will generate between 3 and 5 kWh of heat.

By comparison, modern oil boilers turn about 92% of the energy they consume into heat.

  • Almost certainly not. Heat pumps are just as effective as boilers at heating a home, as long as the system has been designed and installed properly. You won’t need to re-insulate just because you’re changing to a heat pump.

Of course, as with any heating system the better the insulation in your home the less hard your system has to work, so it’s always advisable to insulate where you can.

This recent report funding by the UK Government found that every home in the UK can take a heat pump without any extra work.

  • No, heat pumps are generally quiet.

The outdoor unit produces a low-level humming sound, similar to a refrigerator. Modern models are designed with noise reduction features, making them unobtrusive and suitable for residential areas.

  • Air-source heat pumps are a similar size to a modern gas boiler but are sited outside the home. This means you will typically regain valuable cupboard space in your home.

The heat pump unit can be sited anywhere outside with a moderate amount of clearance around it.

System hot-water tanks can be sited in existing airing cupboards or in loft space depending on your preference.
